DESCRIPTION

Grappling with the constraints and opportunities the U.S. Army faces in designing policy and strategic options for the post-INF era, a select group of scholars, military officers, and policymakers outline the current strategic posture of the army, the challenges of the future, and the steps needed to meet those challenges.

The book is the outgrowth of a workshop held to address issues raised by the U.S. Army Chief of Staff. In its final form, it presents a cohesive picture of those issues, discussing the changing European security environment, public attitudes in the U.S., legislative and budgetary concerns, the status of the U.S. reserve forces and the education of military officers, conflicts outside of Europe, and the implications of maritime and air strategy for the army's strategic posture.
